Automatic Speech Recognition: Professor Häb-Umbach Appointed IEEE Fellow
The US Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) has appointed Prof. Dr. Reinhold Häb-Umbach from Paderborn University as IEEE fellow. Häb-Umbach, head of the communications engineering department, received this award for his contributions to improving the robustness of automatic speech recognition against distortion. The technology is an important component for voice assistants such as Amazon Echo and Google Home, for example to hide ambient noise when a speaker is further away from the recording source.
With more than 400,000 members in over 160 countries, IEEE is the world’s largest engineering organization and deals with technologies and developments in the fields of telecommunications, computers, electricity, aviation systems and consumer electronics.
